Patrick McDonnell on his role in Father Ted

Landing a part on Father Ted 20 years ago kickstarted Patrick McDonnell's career - but it also led to a lifetime of awkward encounters. The comic starred as Eoin McLove, the genitally-challenged crooner modelled on Daniel O'Donnell in a classic episode of the beloved sitcom.

Pauline McLynn: They auditioned everyone before me

"They saw everyone in the country for Mrs Doyle before me. When they did eventually get round to me I was grey to the gills because I'd had a bad chicken sandwich the night before and I was afraid I'd hurl over someone at my audition. But maybe that's what got me the part."

Down with that sort of thing: 'Father Ted' at 20

It's never 20 years since Father Ted first screened on Channel 4. You'd have to be Hitler or one of them mad fellas to believe that.

Donald Clarke, The Irish Times, 25th April 2015

20 years of Father Ted

This week Father Ted turned 20. I know what you're thinking; bit young for a clergyman. However you look at it; 20 years is an outstanding achievement.

Drink - Father Ted celebrates 20 years

When artist Spencer Tunick got hundreds of volunteers to strip naked at Blarney Castle in Co Cork, a small group of young men, dressed as priests, warned those taking part to be "careful now". And during student protests in Dublin in 2010, home-made 'Down with this sort of thing' placards featured in almost every demonstration. Students who were even not born when Father Ted was first broadcast happily shouted "feck fees".
