Doc Martin (2004)

Dr Ellingham is infuriated when the locals discover his 'issue' with blood. Then his little problem is put to the most extreme test imaginable when young Peter Cronk must be rushed to hospital in the dead of night.

The tourist season has arrived in Portwenn. Disgruntled by the invasion of holidaymakers, Martin grimaces as he makes his way through the crowds. Then he notices an attractive woman, and stops to stare... at her chest.

Not surprisingly she's annoyed at his blatancy. Martin was actually trying to warn the woman about the dangers of sunbathing with a suspicious mole on show - a possible cancerous growth - but his usual abrupt and quirky manner has caused offence.

At the surgery Adrian Pitts is waiting to see Martin. A former pupil now working at the nearest hospital, he has come in hope of a word for a promotion. But Martin tells him in no uncertain terms to get lost.

Whilst attending to patients later, Dr Ellingham is infuriated to be called away to what turns out to be a tomato ketchup-based prank: it seems that some of the locals have heard of the real reason for his move to Cornwall, and it's not long before the entire village is talking about it.

Meanwhile, young Peter Cronk is objecting to taking part in P.E. at school. He points out that it's a fruitless waste of time he could be spending learning, but Louisa talks him into participating - unfortunately, it's not long before he has fallen hard on his chest. Martin is called to examine him but, still infuriated by the locals' behaviour, growls that Louisa should take him to hospital.

There, they diagnose nothing more serious - much to Louisa's relief - than some heavy bruising, and it's his mother Joy, a panic attack sufferer, who seems worse off.

But when Louisa receives a call in the middle of the night with heavy breathing on the end of the line, she knows something further has happened. Peter has deteriorated fast and Joy collapsed on the floor. Martin rushes round, quickly diagnosing a probable ruptured spleen and internal bleeding.

It's now a race against time to get the nine year old to the hospital, almost an hour's drive away, before it's too late. But the air ambulance is broken...
