Maisie is an incurable romantic, while her husband, Bert, is the ultimate slob. For 17 years she has suffered her loutish partner but now her patience has run out, so she creates dividing lines and strict chore rotas and attempts to live separately.
Despite Maisie's determination, the thick-skinned Bert still thinks that his wife will "snap out of it in the end" and tries to chisel every chink in her armour into a gaping hole.
When their daughter Susan, whom they both love dearly, becomes pregnant and leaves her Spanish husband and moves back home, Maisie is forced out of the spare room and back into the marital bed. Bert figures this will finally effect a full reconciliation, but his own failings continue to conspire against such an eventuality.
