The toaster breaks down, but the company refuses to pay for a new one; Bren fails to make it to the TV studio in time to play for the final £10,000 prize; and Petula's time on this earth does indeed finally come to an end. Unfortunately, there's still more upsetting news in store for the canteen staff.
