1. A Bit Whiffy
Friday 12th January 1990
Colin's story is featured in the Langley book of horror. He is delighted and on returning to work dances on his desk.
Jen and Colin go out to dinner and they reflect on Colin's new success. Especially has he has been put in touch with a film producer, Alan Hunter. Jen is unusually emotional about it.
Colin meets Hunter but is out of his depth and gets confused. On returning home Colin is elated but is brought down to earth when Jen reveals she has been made redundant.
Back at the office Colin skips a 'Best Station' award ceremony and is panicking on an unreturned phone call from Hunter. He leaves the office but kicks the door in when he hears the phone. But it's just the results of the awards.
2. A Piece Of Cake
Friday 19th January 1990
Colin is asked to be best man at Trevors wedding which he reluctantly accepts.
At home he writes the best man speech but Jen doesn't find it funny.
He throws a stag party for Trevor but the following morning Colin is distressed because he can't remember where he put the ring. He turns his flat upside down but it turns out to have been around his neck on a piece of string the whole time.
Colin delivers his speech at the wedding to deafening silence so ends up having a rant at everyone.
At the flat Colin wakes up on the settee and thinks its all been a dream. Jen eating some wedding cake informs him that its been anything but.
3. Zanzibar
Friday 26th January 1990
Colin meets Alan Hunter who is interested in offering Colin a TV deal. During the meeting Colin understands little of we he's asked to do.
Back in the office a passenger who Colin has filed under 'no further action required' has held up a train.
Stuart and Rosemary come round but Colin is frustrated that he canot go drinking with Alan Hunter eventually leaving to meet but he doesn't show up.
Colin writes a piece inspired by his hatred of his work colleagues.
At the office everybody reads Colin's piece about them and he gets a phone call from Jen to take her to an interview and Hunter invites him round to discuss his story as well.
Hunter tells Colin he hates his script and will not use it and Colin forgets about giving Jen a lift.
Hunter calls and says he's changed his mind and offers Colin ten grand for his work but he has to get around to his place now. To get out of work Colin fakes illness but fails to get to Hunters as an ambulance is called and he's taken off to hopital
4. Night Thoughts
Friday 2nd February 1990
Colin has to re-work his script but can't think of anything. He returns it to Hunter re-written but he throws it in the bin and asks him to do it again.
Two more visits to Hunter with no joy and Colin has no sleep due to working on the script.
Colin shows Des his new computer but ends up erasing his whole script which he then re-writes over night.
At work Colin tells Travers that he's thinking of giving up his job to concentrate on writing. Travers then offers Colin a promotion. He doesn't respond however because he's over tired from all night re-writes. In fact he's asleep.
5. Frank
Friday 9th February 1990
Colin and Jen are asked to Sarah and Richards engagement party which sparks off a row between them as to their future together. Jen ends up slapping Colin.
Colin gets a phone call to say that his dad has been taken into hospital with a stroke and is in a coma.
Colin meets his mum at the hospital and they are told his dad wont last the night. However his dad clings on and Colin guiltily wishes he would just die.
At home Colin's mum suggests a new angle for his story which he tries out.
One week later and Colin gives his new script to Jen to hand to Hunter. He returns to the hospital only to find his dad has died.
At home Colin gets a message from Hunter saying that he loves the script and one from Des saying that Richard has walked out on Sarah.
6. Out To Lunch
Friday 16th February 1990
Colin and his mum attend his dad's funeral but end up at the wrong one.
At home Jen pulls the plug on his computer when he tries to start changing his script. She tells him he needs a rest and to book a holiday. Colin instead books a meal in a French restaurant.
Colin decides he can no longer balance two jobs and decides to resign from his job at British Rail.
At the office Travers asks him is there anything he'd like to do before he leaves. We end with a shot of all the trains being cancelled at Waterloo.
