Rebecca Root on BBC's new trans sitcom

It may be a new acting job for Rebecca Root, who has worked in numerous stage and TV roles during her professional life, but this one comes with an added level of responsibility by nature of the intensely personal and groundbreaking story of the lead character being a trans person.

Boy Meets Girl: It's not the trans Terry And June...

"It's not that most people are mean, it's just that they don't know any trans people. And after this, everyone will feel like they know one." So said Paris Lees, journalist and transgender rights activist, at a preview screening of Boy Meets Girl.

Chortle, 2nd September 2015

It's about a younger man dating an older woman. It opens as Leo is having a miserable day: he's just been sacked - again - and then he ends up feeling ignored and useless as he tags along with his friends on a night out. At the bar, he begins talking to Judy, an attractive older woman. The BBC may think they're being daring here, but "older woman" is hardly an apt description. The actress looks like a perfectly normal 30-something. This will hardly satisfy those who're saying the BBC, and TV and film in general, should make older women more visible on TV.

Boy Meets Girl - Episode 1 review

Obvious comparisons are going to be drawn with Gavin & Stacey - but, rather than being a rip-off, Boy Meets Girl is an educational, sentimental, funny and heart-warming tale of an unlikely love between a boy and a girl.

Rebecca Root's breakthrough could have happened earlier

The Boy Meets Girl actress was cast as a trans woman in Casualty in 2003 but was "devastated" when her role was scrapped by show bosses.
