Betsan has done well by her children. She has skimped and slaved to set them on their way in the world and now her work is done. All her life has been spent in one house in Cwmaber, but what, ask her children, is the point of her staying there now?
So she goes to live with David and his wife Ethel in the Midlands. They are both kind to her, too kind perhaps, and is there a suggestion that they are ashamed of her? If so it is a suggestion delayed, for as the play opens her other sons and their wives have come to see her with old Benji, her erstwhile neighbour.
They are all fond of Betsan and she is fond of them but she is an active woman, and one with a mind of her own.
