Quiet, unassuming café owner René Artois is perfectly happy to pander to the whims of the occupying forces and wait out the war without any fuss: unfortunately for him, the French Resistance have other ideas for him and his business. Namely, a safe-house for stranded British airmen!

The Village of Nouvion in Occupied France, 1941. Two escaping British airmen are sent by the French Resistance to hide in Rene's Café, a small dining establishment. But nobody at Rene's speaks any English, and no one is ready for the intrigue that follows.
Notes
This episode was repeated on 6th September 1984, the night before Series 1 began. Consequently, it is often confused with being part of the series proper, and some listings give it as the first of 8 episodes. Further confusion with episode titles has lead to some listings providing this title as that of the first of Series 1.
