The teams thrash out the hot topics of the week by examining surveys, opinion polls and statistics; discussing both silly and serious stuff. Subjects include showbiz gossip, world politics and even the weather.
Until 2016, Sean Lock and Jon Richardson were the team captains. Previously, the comedian opposing Lock was Jason Manford, and before that it was Dave Spikey. In the final years of the show, team captains included the likes of Rob Beckett, Aisling Bea and Katherine Ryan.
Spin-off format 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown has outlived this original.
