Sitcom Mission

Frequently asked questions

Here are some questions we've been asked about Sitcom Mission:

Why did you start Sitcom Mission?

We'd been involved in sitcom readings as actors and wanted to take it to another level, so began the process of showcasing new work to be both industry and public-friendly.

How long has Sitcom Mission been going?

Since 2010, but we've been producing live sitcom for much longer.

Who comes to the Sitcom Mission showcases?

Comedy commissioners from BBC TV, BBC radio, ITV and Channel 4, Comedy Central, Sky and producers from all the major TV production companies. The shows also attract acting and literary agents, directors, writers and members of the public. There's a real thirst for good live sitcom.

Tell me about the selection process and what happens next...

We will read every script that's submitted to Sitcom Mission, and if a script shows promise, it will get passed on to a second reader to be considered as a finalist.

We're committed to developing scripts rather than just staging the best ones that we've been sent, so the next step in the process (if you've chosen a bronze, silver or gold entry) is to give notes and work with writers on subsequent drafts. This means that by the time your work is seen by commissioners and production companies it has the best chance possible.

If you want to work on your script outside of the competition, we also offer year-round feedback and online Zoom-based courses. Check our website and socials for updates.

I've already written a 30-minute sitcom formatted for TV, can I enter it?

No, but you can make it 15 minutes. We don't want just the first half of something. We need to see how you can resolve a plot, so we're looking for a 15-minute self-contained script. Beginning, middle and satisfying (if surprising) end which ideally hints at future episodes.

Do I have to attend one of your online courses to stand a chance of winning?

Of course not. However, we've read thousands of scripts, so it's easy for us to identify common faults in the ones that don't work, and common strengths in those that do. Many finalists and winners have attended our courses, but others have got there without this.

Are you looking for sketches?

Not yet. At the moment we're just looking for 15-minute sitcoms.
