Sitcom Mission 2020

Monday 30th December 2019

We're back!

It may be a cliche to say that we're back 'due to popular demand' but so many people have begged us to run Sitcom Mission again that 'popular demand' is precisely why we're running this year's competition.

We'll be writing a series of blogs aimed at giving you the best chance of success. Read these (and our blog archive) and you'll have plenty of tips that will help you not only in our competition but in others such as BBC Writersroom, Sitcom Geeks, BAFTA Rocliffe etc

So here, at the suggestion of the wonderful Mark of BCG, is tip number one:

DON'T SEND US ANYTHING UNTIL YOU HAVE TO.

We're receiving scripts from 1st January to Sunday 3rd May (11:59pm). If you send a script as soon as we're open, you won't be able to change anything even though you have nearly 17 weeks to work on it. Why deny yourself the opportunity to improve it? Better to put it away for a couple of weeks, look at it with fresh eyes and then do another draft. And another one, and another.

Then submit it. When it's as good as it possibly can be.

So don't enter as soon as the competition opens unless you want to take advantage of our Gold and Silver options and get feedback before submitting a fresh draft. See the Entry Info page for details.

And, finally, we'd like to acknowledge the enormous contribution that Declan Hill has made to Sitcom Mission. We asked him for some words about his time and this is what he said:

"In 2010, Declan formed production company Every 1's A Critic with Simon. Thousands of scripts, a best-selling book, radio appearances, a place on the panel at Big Comedy Conference, teaching sitcom-writing and an eight-year rollercoaster ride later, he said a fond farewell to Sitcom Mission to focus on new projects - Sitcom in Advertising and an improvised sitcom - and spend more time with his family.

"Declan wishes Simon and Lawrence all the best with the next stage of Sitcom Mission, and looks forward to them taking the project to even greater heights."

Thanks, Dec.
