Alan Davies writes a memoir about the dark side of stand-up
- Alan Davies' latest book will recount the underside of the UK's exploding comedy scene in the 1980s and 1990s
- Recalling the era when comedy was dubbed "the new rock 'n' roll", the currently untitled book will find the QI star reflecting upon the drugs, the power imbalances and those in the industry who lost themselves and their lives along the way
- Publisher Monoray says the book will feature "many brilliant comedians who are unknown today and many others who have become incredibly famous, whether they are named or not!"
Alan Davies is writing a memoir about the darker side of stand-up, British Comedy Guide can exclusively reveal.
The QI star, whose 2020 autobiography, Just Ignore Him, recounted the death of his mother and the sexual abuse he suffered as a boy at the hands of his father, is promising to explore the underside of UK's exploding comedy scene in the 1980s and 1990s.
In the currently untitled book, set to be published on 11th September by Octopus imprint Monoray - which has previously put out Geoff Norcott's memoir and last month Daniel Foxx's Bedtime Stories For Privileged Children - Davies promises to "dig deep" into understanding his own drives and motives, recalling his rapid ascent to stardom in Jonathan Creek and equally rapid disillusionment when he betrayed his ideals in accepting almost £1m for a series of Abbey National adverts.
As Eddie Izzard put it to him, seeking the love of audiences to replace the love of a mother is ultimately futile. And throwing yourself into work and play when the one thing you think about every day is never mentioned, is unsustainable.
Returning to the era when comedy was dubbed "the new rock 'n' roll", Davies reflects upon the drugs, the power imbalances and those in the industry who lost themselves and their lives along the way. The book also pledges to showcase "many brilliant comedians who are unknown today and many others who have become incredibly famous, whether they are named or not!
"The power of comedy, the joy it brings, is all here" the blurb adds. "But so is the flip side, in this rich, beautifully written, powerful and insightful memoir that will give us a deeper understanding of what it takes to become a top level comedian and a human being who is at peace with themselves and those around them."
Returning to television screens with Sandi Toksvig in series V of QI next Tuesday on BBC Two, Davies' previous memoirs include 2010's Teenage Revolution, which was turned into a Channel 4 series the same year, and My Favourite People & Me: 1978-1988, published in 2015.

Alan Davies - TBC 2025 book
In 2020, much loved, household name British comedian Alan Davies published an extraordinary book, setting his work apart from so many other comedians' memoirs. Just Ignore Him was a beautiful, powerful and at times shocking memoir of a difficult childhood that won enormous praise and sold more than 100,000 copies.
Now Alan Davies returns with another exceptional book, this time about becoming a comedian in the 80s and 90s - and again, it will not be what you expect. As well as offering an often hilarious, compelling narrative about his own rapid ascent to stardom (as the lead in Jonathan Creek), and equally rapid disillusionment (when he betrays all his ideals in accepting almost £1m for an advert), Alan digs deep into understanding his own drive and motives. As Eddie Izzard puts it to him, seeking the love of audiences to replace the love of a mother is ultimately futile, and throwing yourself into work and play when the one thing you think about every day is never mentioned, is unsustainable.
Taking us through this landscape of 'comedy as the new rock 'n' roll', Davies lifts the lid on the darker side of the industry - including the drugs, the power imbalances, and those who lost themselves and their lives along the way. There has never been a memoir about the 80s and 90s comedy explosion that is so honest and revealing. The book is inhabited by so many people, including many brilliant comedians who are unknown today and many others who have become incredibly famous (whether they are named or not!). The power of comedy, the joy it brings, is all here - but so is the flip side, in this rich, beautifully written, powerful and insightful memoir that will give us a deeper understanding of what it takes to become a top level comedian - and a human being who is at peace with themselves and those around them.
