  • Fraser says: "I can't believe that something this ridiculous got funded so quickly"

Alice Fraser's spoof author character D'Ancey LaGuarde is to become published for real, following a successful crowdfunding drive via Unbound.

LaGuarde will be familiar to listeners of The Bugle podcast, as Fraser creates fake adverts for the character's books to appear in the podcasts.

The D'Ancey LaGuarde Reader is described as follows: "The ads for D'Ancey LaGuarde books with their lascivious synopses became a staple of Alice's fake ads section in her podcasts. D'Ancey, who is a mysterious online bestseller and romance maven of unspecified origins and gender turns out about one book every four days - usually historical romance novels with a supernatural twist, but occasionally sci-fi, fantasy and action novels. These fictional fictions are pumped full of creamy breasts, sweating abs and fingering on horseback, and audiences can't seem to get enough of them.

"Alice Fraser will channel D'Ancey to create The D'Ancey LaGuarde Reader, for fans and haters alike. A book about a joke about books, which will appeal not just to The Bugle audience but also to podcast fans, book fans, joke fans and fans of heaving bosoms in fraught situations. It's just all so silly.

"With a foreword from Andy Zaltzman, the book will include full colour covers, commentary and interviews as well as never before seen D'Ancey excerpts, full chapters and bloopers."

LaGuarde's book titles have included The Highlands Laird's Christmas Miracle, The Femme Falcon, A Cowboy Called Home and Little Red Riding Werewolf.

Nearly 500 backers pledged funds to help make the new book a reality, with the project hitting the 100% funding mark in under a week.

Speaking to BCG, Fraser says: "I can't believe that something this ridiculous got funded so quickly.

"It's not just that it's a real book about a fake author, it's also that it's a real book for a fake author invented for a fake ad section on a show set in a fake universe that was a spin off of The Bugle, a show famed for its relentless bullshit.

"Crowdfunding can feel a bit awkward - like asking for something for nothing. But with a baby, two podcasts as well as live work and writing it's impossible to justify investing time into writing a book on the off chance someone would be interested.

"It's one reason why I feel good about doing the D'Ancy book with Unbound because it's straightforwardly funded itself via pre-sales which feels nice and sustainable."

Although the project is now guaranteed to go ahead, it isn't too late to back the project. Rewards on the book's Unbound page include signed first edition hardback copies, and a tie-in notebook.
