Barry Cryer

Barry Cryer is to be the subject of a new biography by his son Bob, British Comedy Guide can exclusively reveal.

The generation-spanning comic died in January last year and Barry Cryer: Same Time Tomorrow? The Life And Laughs Of A Comedy Legend will be published on the 26th October by Bloomsbury.

The book is described as "not just a wonderfully witty and affectionate biography of a father by a son, but a heart-warming insight into a vanishing era of comedy."

Alongside Bob's reflections on living and working with his father, Same Time Tomorrow? features exclusive family photos, extracts from recordings and interviews with Cryer's friends and colleagues, including Sandi Toksvig, Rob Brydon and Judi Dench.

A comedy writer and actor himself, whose credits include the Mrs Hudson's Diaries series of books, which he co-wrote with his father and which were turned into the 2018 Radio 4 sitcom Mrs Hudson's Radio Show, as well as the retrospective podcast Now, Where Were We?, on which they collaborated shortly before Barry died, Bob Cryer put out an appeal on social media in December for "any unseen photos, clippings or general Baz ephemera that you might have" to "celebrate the old boy in time for what would have been his 88th birthday".

Same Time Tomorrow? promises to be "an ode to both Barry's incredible life and to the lessons he so generously imparted on the art of comedy" and to offer "a unique insight into British comedy from Monty Python to the modern day."

The I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue star was a prolific writer with a long and distinguished career on television and radio who worked with such notable talent as Morecambe & Wise, The Two Ronnies, Tommy Cooper, Les Dawson, Kenny Everett, Bob Hope and Richard Pryor.

Paying tribute after Cryer's passing, his family issued a statement, saying: "Dad was a talented comedy writer and comedian in a particularly golden vintage. Incidentally he never really liked the terms 'comedy writer' or 'comedian', instead preferring hack and entertainer, and always thought the term 'national treasure' meant he'd just been dug up. He was, in his words, arrogant in his humility.

"He had a gift for friendship (as anyone who still has a landline will testify) and a genius for putting people at their ease. Oh yes, and he made many people laugh. A lot. Over many years."

The statement concluded: "And to end, as Dad would say, 'Same time tomorrow?'"

An audiobook version of the biography is already available to pre-order.

'I don't know how long I've got left... I don't even buy green bananas anymore'

When the legendary comedian Barry Cryer died in January 2022, there was a vast outpouring of grief, appreciation and anecdotes - from the general public and fellow comics alike. Now, his son, Bob, is doing what Barry's humility did not allow: revealing the story of the man behind the jokes.

This book is an ode to both Barry's incredible life and to the lessons he so generously imparted on the art of comedy during his sixty-year career. Stretching from the music halls of the fifties, via working alongside everyone from Morecambe & Wise to John Cleese and David Frost, and into more recent times as a stalwart of Radio 4's long-running I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, this book is a hugely entertaining insight into the life of a true comedy legend. Bob also shares a range of exclusive material unique to the Cryer family - including family photos, memorabilia, oral recordings, interviews with friends and colleagues (among them Sandi Toksvig, Rob Brydon and Judi Dench) - as well as Bob's own personal reflections on living and working with a comedy icon.

Laced with candour, warmth and filled with his trademark humour, Barry Cryer: Same Time Tomorrow? is not just a wonderfully witty and affectionate biography of a father by a son, but a heart-warming insight into a vanishing era of comedy.
