Comedian Ed Patrick to publish anaesthetist book
- Stand-up Ed Patrick is to publish a memoir about his day job as an NHS anaesthetist
- Catch Your Breath will be published on 26th August
- He says he is "excited to shed more light" on the job and "the mysterious world of drugs and coffee"
Comedian Ed Patrick, who also works as an anaesthetist, is to publish a memoir called Catch Your Breath.
Sub-titled The Secret Life of a Sleepless Anaesthetist, the 288 page book will be published by Brazen, the new imprint of Octopus Publishing Group, on 26th August.
The book is described as "a gut punch of a memoir by a doctor - and comedian - whose job is to keep people alive by putting them to sleep."
The blurb explains: "Ed Patrick is an anaesthetist. Strong drugs for his patients, strong coffee for him. But it's not just sleep-giving for this anaesthetist, as he navigates emergencies, patients not breathing for themselves and living with a terrifying sense of responsibility. It's enough to leave anyone feeling numb. But don't worry, there's plenty of laughing gas to be had."
When not working in hospitals, Ed Patrick performs stand-up comedian around the UK. He also hosts the Comedians' Surgery podcast and last year hosted his own comedy show on Radio 2 titled Infectious Personalities.
Talking to The Bookseller, Ed Patrick commented: "I didn't expect that being an anaesthetist in a pandemic would leave me outside my front door naked, or indeed that I'd be telling this story to readers. Nevertheless, I am excited to shed more light on this and the mysterious world of drugs and coffee."
Publisher Romilly Morgan added: "I read Ed's proposal in one sitting and pre-empted the book the next day. He manages to be both wickedly funny and gut-punch tragic all in one sentence. If James Herriot had been an anaesthetist, he would have written a book a lot like this."
