People Like Us - Series Two
Before The Office there was People Like Us, six fly on the wall mockumentaries chronicling the embarassments, misstatements, and general unsightliness of workplace life.
Starring Chris Langham. Featuring Bill Nighy, David Tennant, Jessica Hynes, Sarah Alexander and Robert Webb.
BBC interviewer Roy Mallard travels the country to talk to ordinary folk and get under the skin of what it's really like to be one of Britain's unsung professionals.
Mallard has little or no skill as an interviewer: he is over-earnest, and after most of his voiceovers, you realize there's something slightly odd about what he's said.
He's hopelessly inept, staggeringly gauche and linguistically challenged. Utterly insensitive to nuance or atmosphere, he is constantly caught off guard by his interviewees who take his questions too literally. Slowly but relentlessly, he gets caught up in some distracting human mini-drama that dominates the entire episode.
He tends to talk nonsense and is so obviously unattractive there's a running joke that nobody can believe he's married.
