A run-down boarding house in an unnamed northern English town is home to Miss Ruth Jones, an administrator at the local university; a medical student, Alan; the grubby, unfriendly landlord Rupert Rigsby, and his cat, Vienna. When a room in the house becomes vacant Miss Jones suggests that she knows a suitable candidate.
