Pongo's football team - his pride and obsession - have been hopelessly beaten. Officer Clissitt threatens to disband the team. The situation is made all the more humiliating for Clissitt when the men on Officer Mill's corridor win a trophy for draughts. In protest against Clissitt's rash threats, 'Pongo' and 'Mushy' go on hunger strike. Clissitt does all he can to break them. Both Mills and Clissitt are trying hard to please the new governor who they think is opposed to a team. But they are wrong.
