Mr. Pooter was a City Clerk. As he quietly remarked to Borset, the butterman, he thought it was possible for a City Clerk to be a gentleman; but he would not have liked to think that he might be immortal. Supposing the neighbours had come to heart of it! And what if Mr. Perkupp, the head of the firm, were to learn that his senior clerk would one day be ranked with Don Quixote!
