  • Radio 4's The Skewer won the gold award for comedy in the Audio & Radio Industry Awards 2021
  • The satirical show created by Jon Holmes also won silver in the Best New Show category

Satirical comedy show The Skewer has won the gold award at the Audio & Radio Industry Awards 2021.

The topical comedy show splices together audio clips to form new dialogue, in a dream-like soundscape.

The show has been on Radio 4 since 2019, with its twelve-part third series airing over January to March. It is due to return on 2nd June for a fourth series.

Created and produced by Jon Holmes for Unusual Productions, The Skewer is notable for being an open-door topical show, accepting submissions from up-and-coming comedy writers. The BBC describes it as "a radio comedy access point for a new generation of satirists who don't write sketches, jokes and one liners, but instead channel their talents into playing around with sound."

The Skewer not only picked up the gold award in the Comedy category, but it also took home the silver award in the Best New Show shortlist.

Reacting to the show's success on Twitter, Jon Holmes simply posted the word "Jeez."

Later, he added: "So The Skewer has won Silver & Gold at @radioacademy #ukarias. Industry's biggest night, and I'm thrilled for all our contributors. Too many to thank, but special kudos to Tony Churnside for tolerating my stupid sound ideas and obscure #protools plugins."

The other shows nominated in the Comedy category were podcasts Alan Partridge: From The Oasthouse and Kim Noble: Futile Attempts (At Surviving Tomorrow), Absolute Radio programme The Jason Manford Show, BBC Radio Wales format The Musical Life Of... and BBC Radio 4 sketch series Sketchtopia.

The judges awarded the silver title to Sketchtopia, with The Jason Manford Show collecting the bronze award.

Elsewhere in the awards, Elis James and John Robins were given the bronze award in the Best Speech Presenter category, and Audible picked up a gold award in the Best Marketing Campaign category for their promotion of the Alan Partridge podcast.
