Dead Ringers star Jan Ravens is working on a Radio 4 sitcom pilot about the private life of Prime Minister Theresa May.

The Mail On Sunday reveals: "The BBC is planning an insight into what might be going on behind closed doors at No 10 - in a radio comedy starring impressionist Jan Ravens as the Prime Minister."

Ravens has portrayed May on topical impressions show Dead Ringers since the politician rose to prominence. She revealed to the newspaper she has been given the go ahead by the BBC to make a pilot for a weekly series about the Prime Minister, adding: "I thought about a 15-minute sitcom about the Mays at home. The idea is based on them in the Downing Street flat when they kick off their shoes."

She also said: "We will want the script to concentrate on the main issues of the week but couched in a domestic situation. Maybe we'll have Theresa going to choir practice or a book club."

The Prime Minister's husband, finance executive Philip, will also feature prominently in the show. The part has not yet been cast but as Philip grew up in Liverpool the newspaper puts Paul McGann, David Morrissey and Alexei Sayle in the frame for the part.

The BBC said the currently un-titled show was in the "early stages of development." Ravens hopes the pilot will go out on Radio 4 later in the year.

Ravens is due to tour with Rory Bremner from March. In the below video she showcases her impression of the Prime Minister:
