Caroline and Sylvia are engaged to protect a bachelor from becoming ensnared.

The man lurking outside turns out not to be the private detective Sylvia supposes, but a potential client. He has inadvertently encouraged a middle-aged American academic, in whom he has no romantic interest, to have hopes of a shared future. She is arriving next week, expecting to stay with him. Caroline says it's not what they're there for. Sylvia says it is. She suggests that Caroline should pretend to be his wife. Caroline refuses, she's had her fill of being a wife. It is decided instead that Sylvia will pretend to be his resident mother. Unfortunately, the American warms to Sylvia and her presence in the household is seen to be an asset. So Caroline is called upon to act the wife after all, to retrieve a dangerous situation and the promised fee. The plan works, the academic returns to America and Caroline finds she has enjoyed herself - she and the client have an unexpected rapport. But, to Sylvia's disappointment, Caroline backs away. The last thing she needs in her life is another duplicitous man.
