Jazz Emu interview

Jazz Emu. Archie Henderson

In the run up to his audio show coming to BBC Radio 4, Jazz Emu has given British Comedy Guide an exclusive insight into the making of the series...

So, Jazz. Why did you decide to make this show?

Inspired by the charitable works of Sir Bob Geldoff and Bono this show was conceived as a charity project: bestowing the gift of my peanut-butter (smooth) voice on the masses.

It was originally conceived as a formally ground-breaking TV show. The pitch? A man, sat in his living room, listening to 4x15 minute segments of a radio show written by me. Commissioners incorrectly stated that this concept might be better suited to the actual radio format itself. So here we are, the BBC once again wasting the license-fee-payer's money on an unambitious, visionless incarnation of Natural Genius. As someone who has on multiple occasions considered paying the license fee, you can imagine I was disappointed.

How did you come up with the name for the programme?

There were many early conceptions for the title of the show. Below is a selection of genuine draft names, which I haven't just fabricated to cynically maximise the Search Engine Optimisation for this article. These included:

Jazz Emu: I Like The Sound Of That

Jazz Emu: black-mirror-traitors-watch-online-free-UK-stream-no-virus

Jazz Emu: POV home video tape Ryan Reynolds nude leak download zip 2024 full movie.avi (read description)

Jazz Emu: diabetes herbal remedy astral projection binaural beats 260khz subtitulos Espanoles

Jazz Emu: Amazon Prime login

Who is this show for?

This show is for -philes of every order: Audio-! Musico-! Anglo-! (Edit: The BBC have asked me to clarify this comes with some exceptions).

What was it like working with the BBC?

It was an honour to cross over the hallowed threshold of one of our nation's great institutions. I have to admit, I was a little worried about the BBC's supposed lack of impartiality. But the producers at the BBC were incredibly diligent in refusing to praise any of my ideas, or even really to acknowledge that I was saying anything at all. You've got to hand it to them, those guys know how to sit on the fence!

The BBC were typically keen to tick some boxes, so we were extremely careful to set the radio show in The North. Of course it's never mentioned, doesn't inform the plot, and is embodied in none of the characters, but I think if you close your eyes, you can really "hear" the soot.

What was the most exciting thing about recording the show?

We were lucky enough to be recording the show in the room next door to Louis Theroux, who was embroiled in the filming of his newest documentary: The Epidemic of British Male Loneliness. I was honoured that he sought my advice and consultation so frequently, in fact he was filming and interviewing me for the duration of our recording. I guess the man knows an expert in documentary-making when he sees one. It's just a shame he was always too busy to grab a drink at the end of our working days.
