Set at a small fictitious Cambridge College, the story begins with Peter Devanti, a notorious TV populariser of history. One day he is invited to dine at the colleges High Table. However, shortly after the dinner, Devanti is found dead.
While at first it is claimed to be a nut allergy that no-one knew about, the college's master thinks it could be worse. He therefore invites Simon Harrison (Samuel West), a former brilliant student who somehow found himself working in Health and Safety, to solve the case.
