The use of characters and cast differs substantially between the original television versions and the first series of radio adaptations. Keen to cut costs, the BBC limited the number of stars who could be featured in each programme, so adapters Harold Snoad and Michael Knowles had to revolve the use of platoon members between each episode. Only Captain Mainwaring (Arthur Lowe), Sergeant Wilson (John Le Mesurier) and Lance Corporal Jones (Clive Dunn) featured in every single edition. After the series was aired and proved a hit, the BBC allowed them full use of the cast, as per the original TV scripts, from Series 2.
