The Comedy Doctor on main characters
A member asks: I've been told a number of times now that 5 characters is a good number for my sitcom pilot script. Can there be anyone else in it? Or is it a case of '5 characters and that's it'?

The number of characters in a script does matter, and it is easily possible to have too many.
As a general rule - particularly for new writers - once you go beyond 7 main characters, you're usually in dangerous territory. Characters become difficult to keep track of, lack sufficient delineation, or are underserved.
