The Comedy Doctor on first gigs

A member asks: I am about to perform my first stand-up gig and am very nervous. My material is funny I think but I am worried that the room won't laugh. Do you have any advice?
Thank you for this question. A first gig is always going to be nerve-racking, but you have to do it sometime!
The first thing to avoid is getting drunk before you perform. A glass of wine or a pint of beer to take the edge off is okay, staggering on lashed and belching incoherently will not go down well.
