There is a lot of debate about the advantages and disadvantages of shooting your own material.
On the one hand, it can be a great creative experience that will teach you a lot. On the other, it's unlikely to lead in and of itself to a television commission - although some ideas that have started as self-funded pilots or short films have gone onto be commissioned by major broadcasters. Adjani Salmon's Dreaming Whilst Black, for example, started as his own web series.
There is a lively national and international short film circuit that you could potentially enter your production into....
