"It's show business, not show charity." Hardly the most edifying industry phrase - but, in the end, it is true.

If you want a long-term career in comedy, then you do need, at some point, to make some money (unless you're a nepo baby, of course).

That does not mean insisting that you're paid for all the work you do.

Particularly early in your career, you will need to do substantial amounts of work for free. Comedy writers will need to generate ideas and treatments and write full scripts, often without receiving any remuneration.
