Become a 'BDNS' writer
Radio is a great place to secure your first break as a comedy writer.
Currently there are four established radio comedy shows that you can submit material to. They are:
Breaking The News: This topical comedy show for BBC Radio Scotland, hosted by Des Clarke, broadcasts on many Friday afternoons across the year.
They require for topical gags for the host's scripts. Many of our members have achieved their first professional credit here.
It's the perfect home for your topical one-liners.
DMs Are Open: This BBC programme is made up entirely of material submitted by up-and-coming writers.
It's worth noting that, since the second series, it's no longer a topical format. Each episode is themed on a set topic.
Keep an eye on BCG Pro for the Series 4 submission announcement.
Noising Up: Another BBC Radio Scotland format, this is a sketch show showcasing Scottish performers.
Produced by The Comedy Unit, the show accepts ideas from writers at every level.
The Skewer: This multi award-winning Radio 4 show, created by Jon Holmes, mashes up audio clips to create a satirical summary of what is going on in the world.
It's quite a different format to write for, but every week they need fresh ideas.
Writing for any one of these shows is a great achievement.
To sell material to all four shows really demonstrates your ability as an up-and-coming comedy writer.
At the present time, according to BCG's database, there's are just a handful of writers who have Breaking The News, DMs Are Open, Noising Up and The Skewer on their CV.
These writers are:
Chris Ballard
Chris Douch
Darren Phillips
Gregor Paton
Jennifer Walker
Mark Granger
Uttom Chowdhury
How about setting yourself the challenge of becoming the next person on this list?
(Alex Garrick-Wright, Ali Panting, Alice Gregg, Nathan Cowley, Owen Pullar, Simon Paul Miller and Trevor Rudge are people we have spotted who are close!)
