They say there's no such thing as a free lunch. Well, perhaps not. But ALCS - the Authors' Licensing & Collecting Society - is as close as many writers will get to free money.
Via processes-that-we-don't-quite-understand-and-don't-need-to (check out the video below), the organisation sources royalties for secondary uses of your work - be that television or radio material, or articles for magazines, or books. Then it pays that dosh to you.
Signing up costs £36, which is deducted from your first distribution. ALCS then takes 10% of the money it collects for you. And that's it. There is a reason...
