Tabby has Type 1 diabetes and Chloe has bipolar type 2. So Sugarcoated Sisters: Bittersweet has a deep meaning for us: we are both people-pleasers and we do tend to sugarcoat things, but in a literal sense, out-of-range blood sugar-levels can be life threatening for Tabby. And both of our lives are riddled with intense ups and downs! Chloe's bipolar depression can be debilitating at times but symptoms of hypomania can also start to seep through at other times.
We chose to go with a bright headdress decorated fully with various types of sweets! Liz Allen (makeup artist) created these for us. It has real flying saucers on it too! We thought puffy pink tulle dresses would be a wonderful match for our overly sweet side (as well as our typically 'maximalist' style). But we feel like the crazed look in our eyes and lightly manic smiles (captured brilliantly by Steve Ullathorne) betrays the true mixed state of panic, excitement, fear, overwhelm and joy that we so often live in. We are really excited to have this picture as our poster, as we feel it's an accurate visual depiction of our challenging mental and physical conditions, our gratitude to be able to enter the live comedy scene, as well as our deep and powerful bond as real sisters. Finally, the broken glass is for smashing existing power-structures.
