Sea Words explores the complexity of responding to mental ill health in close relationships when one person needs help but doesn't know what, and the other wants to help but doesn't know how. Juxtaposing the bright, glossy camp of the seaside entertainer with the endless rising grey of the ocean, the poster captures the central question of the play - can we ever hold back the depths of depression armed with nothing but hope and enthusiasm?
The photoshoot itself took place in early February in the cold waters of the Channel, and the intention had been to get an image of the actor defiantly standing off against the waves, but this photo (taken in the split second the actor was caught off-guard by a suddenly swelling wave) seemed to perfectly capture an authentic look of bewilderment, shock and helplessness.
