Tracey Ullman is a British-American actress, singer and writer best known for her unique range of topical impressions. She has written and filmed a series of hugely successful self-titled sketch-comedy shows on both sides of the Atlantic, and has made frequent appearances in a number of well-known feature films.
After winning a scholarship to the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London, she studied from the age of 12, Ullmann dedicated the early part of her career to professional dancing and singing, and she has five UK top-40 hits to her name -- notably 'They Don't Know' (1983, which also made the top 10 in the US.
She skyrocketed to fame in 1981, when a critically-acclaimed performance in a West End improv show earned her a place in a BBC sketch-comedy show, Three Of A Kind, alongside co-star Lenny Henry. When this ended in 1983, she began to feature in another sitcom, Girls On Top (1985-1986), which saw Ullman team up with Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French -- later creators of Absolutely Fabulous -- to play three very dissimilar young women sharing a flat in the heart of London.
Ullman left the UK for the US after this show's first season, where she made a name for herself through a copious amount of impression son The Tracey Ullman Show (1987-1990) and Tracey Takes On... (1996-1999). Matt Groening's classic and beloved American sitcom The Simpsons, which is the longest-running animated TV series in American history, got its first appearance on The Tracey Ullman Show, a fact which showcases Ullman's key eye for detail. Over a lengthy career at the forefront of US television, Ullman amassed 22 Emmy Award nominations and 6 wins.
After her husband's death in 2013, Ullman returned to Britain to develop Tracey Ullman's Show, which debuted in 2016 to rave reviews. Since then, she has played Aunt Julie in TV miniseries Howard's End, has launched her own sketch show, Tracey Breaks The News ([/y]2017[/y]}, which is fondly remembered for her satirical portrayals of Theresa May, amongst others, and has been a frequent guest host of the long-running BBC comedy quiz show Have I Got News For You.
Ullman's success has seen her appear regularly in major motion pictures, beginning with Give My Regards To Broad Street (1984), written by and starring Paul McCartney. She has also featured in the fast-paced parody Mel Brooks's Robin Hood: Men In Tights (1993) and Woody Allen's black comedy-crime film Bullets Over Broadway (1994).
