Comedy Casebook

Hi Steve. Who are you and what do you do in comedy?

I'm Steve Rose and I like to make people laugh.

Tell us about how you first became involved in the comedy world.

I remember writing a short comedy play at primary school and liking the audience reaction. Similarly contributing sketches for our annual sixth form revue. I tried to write serious pieces but could not resist the temptation to add a comedic slant to situations and dialogue. So I decided to focus on comedy.

Tell us about your comedy favourites.

The comedies I liked growing up were The Young Ones, Not The Nine O'clock News and Blackadder. I enjoy Friends a lot. Anything written by Richard Curtis makes me laugh like a chimp.

What's your proudest moment, in terms of your comedy work?

Getting paid for a script, not the money itself but the knowledge that my writing was worth something. I had been writing as a hobby for 19 years and that time and energy was justified.

If you could change one thing about the UK comedy industry, what would it be?

I'd like to see many more opportunities for new writers to contribute to shows on mainstream media.

Where would you like to be in 10 years' time?

Still making people laugh.

If you ever get free time, how do you spend it?

I like to paint.

If you ever get free time, how do you spend it?

To be able to type as fast as I can think.
