50 best TV shows of 2017, #33: Alas, the last showing for Steve Delaney's Marmite malapropist. When this old-fashioned sitcom was on its best form, it was as good as the classics.

Sitcom Count Arthur Strong is to end after three series, according to a report.
British Comedy Guide, 7th August 2017The sitcom following retired performer Strong reaches the end of its third season. If the guest appearance of John Shuttleworth didn't confirm it, gentle 90s comedy continues to rule. Tonight it's Michael's birthday, an event that, after childhood disappointment, he prefers to manage himself. He reckons without Arthur's box of expiring vouchers. Soon, a mystery excursion is, with occasionally humorous consequences, under way.
John Robinson, The Guardian, 14th July 2017Preview - Count Arthur Strong: Safari Park
There is no news on a fourth series yet, but it seems safe to say the Count will return.
Ian Wolf, On The Box, 14th July 2017This has been a superb series, subtly enhanced by the addition of Bronagh Gallagher as Birdie, doing that looking-on-in-astonishment thing she did so memorably in Pulp Fiction. This week, despite bungling a video audition for an advert, Arthur embarks on an extraordinary run of good fortune which brings him international notoriety; not a good time for Bulent to suggest a poker game in his sister's absence.
David Stubbs, The Guardian, 7th July 2017This truly excellent series plumbs new heights (or depths) of logical surrealism as Arthur invites Michael to a "soupover". This involves pyjamas, although it takes place in the afternoon, and numerous rituals including watching VHS tapes of black-and-white horse races from yesteryear. Rory Kinnear draws on all his Royal Shakespeare Company training to do justice to the horror of it all.
Daivd Stubbs, The Guardian, 30th June 2017TV preview: Count Arthur Strong
This latest series has had a mixed response and maybe it will never win over the fans who prefer the radio version, but this episode really is excellent.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 30th June 2017Live review: Count Arthur Strong, Margate
One of the heated debates on social media is whether Count Arthur Strong has transferred successfully from radio to television. There is a school of thought that somehow the dotty creation of Steve Delaney works better without pictures. I'm not so sure myself. One thing I am sure of though is that he certainly works brilliantly on the live stage.
