Paul Mayhew-Archer: Incurable Optimist review
After a lifetime in comedy, Parkinson's has given him a reason to finally do stand-up, and a determination to make the most of his situation. In this, he's quietly inspirational, though mild-mannered Mayhew-Archer is far too modest to ever make such a claim for himself.
Steve Bennett, Chortle, 23rd March 2019Henry Paker: Man Alive at Soho Theatre review
They might not write love songs for people in long-term relationships, but it turns out Paker's written a delightful, enterprising and classy comedy show for them - as well as those still in, or still seeking, the first flush of romance, too.
Steve Bennett, Chortle, 22nd March 2019Seann Walsh: After This One I'm Going Home review
Seann Walsh isn't the first comedian to open his set with a variation on: 'So I'm single...', nor will he be the last. But few will have landed in that situation quite so publicly as the man whose drunken snog with a work colleague was, by his reckoning, front-page news for 12 straight days.
Steve Bennett, Chortle, 16th March 2019Review - Benjamin
Simon Amstell is a film-maker wh''s made a film about a film maker making a film about his inability to love, a topic that long informed his stand-up.
Steve Bennett, Chortle, 15th March 2019Review - Robert White: The Tank Top Tour
The shambolic nature of the show is part of its appeal, as well as surely being part of White's character, but a little quality control would go a long way to showcase some of his more esoteric, quirky wit rather than the endless crude knob gags.
Steve Bennett, Chortle, 14th March 2019We're Staying Right Here review
The writing would benefit from a little more finesse, variety and editing, getting a little stuck in circular ideas and high-tension exchanges, but Henry Devas's makes a good fist of what is a hugely ambitious aim, to portray the inner demons of a suicidal depressive as a bleakly entertaining night out. We're Staying Right Here does offer such insight, and rarely fails to intrigue.
Steve Bennett, Chortle, 14th March 2019Review - Angela Barnes: Rose Tinted
Panel show regular Angela Barnes is a consummate pro, with her latest stand-up tour offering a brisk canter between the topical and the personal, with a dependable gag at every turn.
Steve Bennett, Chortle, 11th March 2019Review: After Life
Followers of Ricky Gervais's work will spot elements form across the CV in his new Netflix series.
Steve Bennett, Chortle, 9th March 2019Home review
Yes, Home is underpinned by a strong social, political message, but like all good comedies, it's ultimately about relationships and the ridicule of human foibles, from Peter's intransigence to the bureaucracy of the Home Office.
