Chortle Student Comedy Award final 2021 review
This has not been a good year to be a student, or to be a comedian - and twice as challenging to be both. Yet you would never have guessed there had been such unprecedented disruption from the final of the Chortle Student Comedy Award on Monday night, with the young acts providing as strong a line-up as ever.

British Comedy Guide, 21st September 2021Gary Meikle: Surreal review
As the archetypal 'funny mate down the pub' comedian, he certainly puts the work in to make sure everyone feels they know him personally and breaking down the barrier between performer and audience. But being gregarious doesn't feel like enough.
Steve Bennett, Chortle, 20th September 2021Nabil Abdulrashid: N.A.B.I.L. review
Yes, he has his beefs, but they are all justified. Not least against the embittered comic (whom he names) who diminished Abdulrashid's very existence by dismissing his race as a 'gimmick'. In fact, with such a wealth of genuine first-hand experiences he can draw upon without need for embellishment, Abdulrashid is one of the least gimmicky comedians around.

As a trip into corners of the UK that are often overlooked by the media - next week the trio's Mystery Machine rolls up to South Wales - it proves is am amiable, and very watchable, affair.
Steve Bennett, Chortle, 13th September 2021Review: The Cleaner
In Man Down, he created one of the most stupidly funny - and underrated - sitcoms of recent times. But Greg Davies new BBC One project, The Cleaner, is - ironically enough - a messier mix of laughs and drama.

Steve Bennett, Chortle, 9th September 2021The Holden Girls: Mandy & Myrtle review
The whole show seems to have been built around the pun that The Holden Girls sounds a bit like The Golden Girls. Yet the result never even matches that mediocre standard. But you can at least say Holden is consistent. This is just as bad as her BBC comedies Big Top (rating 3.3/10 on IMDB) or Mad About Alice (3.4) - both long-forgotten, and for good reason.
Steve Bennett, Chortle, 8th September 202115 Storeys High review
Why did it take Sean Lock's death for 15 Storeys High to make it to iPlayer? The comedy stands up remarkably well almost two decades on, while in its time it was hugely influential in the transition from big studio sitcoms to more naturalistic styles.

What a time to decide to become a comedian! You'd probably get more job opportunities as an aspiring bear-bater than a would-be stand-up at the moment.
