Many a Britcom has since been hyped as 'the new Full Monty' but none have equalled, let alone surpassed, this hilarious 1997 original.

In it, a group of six broke, unemployed blokes from Sheffield, led by Robert Carlyle's unreliable dad, decide to form an unlikely male striptease act.

While properly LOL as a comedy, Simon Beaufoy's script also has a sincere approach to issues such as depression, obesity, homosexuality and the effects of long-term unemployment.

With a budget of $3.5million, it went to gross $250million, making it the highest-grossing film in Britain - until Titanic.

Stars go the Full Monty on stage in Sheffield

The Full Monty, the 1997 film about Sheffield steelworkers-turned-strippers, was one of the most successful British movies of all time. Now its Oscar-winning writer Simon Beaufoy has transformed it into a play in the city.
