Our highest-placed British sitcom is Catastrophe which has seen creators and stars Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney master the art of television writing. This superior third season saw TV's most likeable lead characters handed a more compelling trajectory than most drama series manage, with escalating life events involving parenthood, family deaths, and alcoholism dealt with in both hilarious and heartfelt manners. How the duo manages to convey an engrossing story amid the comedic antics is nothing short of sensational, positioning Catastrophe as a drama series that just happens to be filled with funny characters (including Rob's mother, Mia, played delectably by the late Carrie Fisher). A series to be preserved for future "this is how you do it" masterclasses.

Kevin's useless, lovable goof shtick has worn thin.

Watching Motherland feels somewhat like how I imagine it feels to watch a car crash unfold. But this is disaster comedy that never takes the easy route.

Vicious middle-class competitive parenting became a painfully sharp sitcom in the hands of Linehan, Horgan et al, with national treasure Diane Morgan its careless hero.

50 best TV shows of 2017, #18: Grief, addiction and a posthumous appearance by Carrie Fisher meant Rob Delaney and Sharon Horgan's sitcom was heartbreaking this year as well as cathartically filthy.

Motherland, episode 4 review

It's become increasingly clear that Julia is not a heroine but an irritant.

Episode four of Linehan, Linehan, Horgan and Walsh's excellent comedy about the Ocado-flavoured trials of suburban motherhood, and Julia (Anna Maxwell Martin) is struggling to cope. In what is now a running gag, she calls husband Paul, who is super busy (read: enjoying punting and Pimms). He offers to send his parents to help, but Elizabeth and Geoff only aggravate Julia further, despite Kevin stepping in to offer his "expertise" with the elderly.

Creators Sharon Horgan and Graham Linehan mine middle-class motherhood for comedy. These aren't your ordinary middle-class mothers though: they are Mumsnet types that live in large houses in suburban London.
