TV: Upstart Crow, BBC2

Ben Elton's eloquent defence of the mainstream sitcom last month was illuminating, fascinating and persuasive. And in a way maybe it could be seen by some as an incidental pre-emptive strike against critics who might have their hatchets sharpened for the new series of Upstart Crow, Elton's popular sitcom about Shakespeare's early years starring David Mitchell. If that is the case though Elton needn't worry. The only thing he has to live with here is critics trotting out the "not-as-good-as-Blackadder" line.

Seven questions with... Rob Rouse

Rob Rouse is a Northern stand up comedian and actor who you may recognise from his recent role as Bottom in Ben Elton's Shakespearean sitcom Upstart Crow. A gleeful performer onstage, Rouse is a comic who effortlessly exudes a positive energy, drawing audiences in with his cheeky delivery and down-to-earth attitude. Rob also produces a comedy podcast, The Rob Rouse Podcast, and this month he embarks on his latest UK tour.

Upstart Crow, series 1 review

Predictable in places, perhaps, but the ridiculous nature of some of these plot lines is arguably in the same vein as of the bards own greatest comedies.

Upstart Crow: joke's already wearing thin in episode 2

Last week's episode of Upstart Crow (BBC Two), Ben Elton's new ye olde sitcom starring David Mitchell as William Shakespeare, would have worked as a one-off stand-alone special for Comic Relief or similar. The thought of a whole series of the thing is a bit tiring.
