Rob has been writing comedy for as long as he can remember. In secondary school, he established a
sketch group with friends called Three Men and a Table, and began writing and performing shows at local arts festivals. He went on to create two one-man shows while in sixth form: one on the fears and frustrations of applying for university called The UCAS Relief Night, and a multi-character show called The Guest Speakers.
During his time at university, Rob studied Media Production and specialised in screenwriting. Around this time, he
began performing character comedy on the stand-up circuit, mainly as loveable but useless protest singer, Jerry Bucham. He took The Guest Speakers to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2010 and returned with Jerry Bucham: Freelance Activist in 2012.
In 2010, Rob won a place on the North East-based BBC comedy scheme called Jesting About, where, alongside a team of
local writers and performers, he contributed sketches and characters to a radio show that was broadcast on BBC Newcastle, Tees, and Radio 4. Following the success of Jesting About, Rob provided additional material for a range of radio and TV shows, including: The Now Show, The News Quiz, Newsjack, The Show What You Wrote, The Headset Set, Dave Gorman's Pub Olympics, and Mock the Week.
In 2014, Rob's sitcom script 'Valerie' was selected as part of the BBC Writersroom Script Room call out. Around this time he also co-founded a new sketch group called Jolly Mixtures.
As a character comedian, Rob performed on the stand-up circuit for six years before leaving to focus on scriptwriting. In 2019, he returned to live performance, premiering a new one-man sketch show at the Leicester Comedy Festival, called Rob Gilroy is in Bits.
Recently, Rob created the character of inept politician Michael La Vache MP and has been posting short topical sketches and web series on social media.
