How Red Dwarf became classic comedy, wobbly sets & all

The classic sitcom has been enjoying a revival of sorts on the BBC: Still Open All Hours, a Keeping Up Appearances prequel, and now even a new series of Porridge (surely a crime in itself). Meanwhile, three million years into deep space - or as it's better known, the comedy channel Dave - Red Dwarf is re-launching for its 12th series. Unlike those other sitcoms though, Red Dwarf, which first aired in February 1988, has never really been away.

Review: Fred MacAulay's masterclass in comedy

For a comedian to be in the industry 29 years you might think they are coming towards the end of their career and their gags would be old.

TV review: Red Dwarf XII, Dave

There are some lovely moments from writer Doug Naylor here as the plot pans out and things are not quite what they seem. Some of the gags are a bit obvious - you can see a Rupert Murdoch swipe light years off - but other touches are neat and imaginative, particularly when the crew get into a sticky patch and are confronted by their own worst fears.
