Sanderson Jones & Pippa Evans set up atheist church

Stand-up comedians Sanderson Jones and Pippa Evans will bring together a godless congregation in the Nave in St Paul's Road, Canonbury for services - with wedding ceremonies and funerals for non-believers even on the cards.

Imogen Blake, The Islington Gazette, 20th December 2012

A mainstay of Friday nights (whenever The News Quiz of the Edinburgh Fringe isn't on), Steve Punt and Hugh Dennis's satirical comedy returns for its 37th series.

Along with other regulars Mitch Benn and Jon Holmes, this week's guests were Pippa Evans and John Finnemore. While all had their strengths, my favourite moment was Finnemore's routine about the Eurozone crisis using what was described as, "the longest, most torturous and yet simultaneously the most over-simplistic analogy in Now Show history."

One of the other things I found enjoyable was the show's coverage of the Diamond Jubilee, mainly due to the fact I got just about all of my jubilee coverage from satirical shows. It's less tedious and more spiritually up-lifting than watching the news. I'm not a monarchist - I couldn't care less about some posh lady in a rather fancy hat - so for me this was a nice way of getting all the news while cutting out all the rubbish filling-in that TV channels feel they need to do.

The Now Show proves once again that it's a highly competent satirical comedy that could well continue for another 37 series...

One always needs a dose of originality after a large helping of nostalgia and that was certainly provided by Showstopper, a new comedy show during which a cast improvises a musical using suggestions from the studio audience. Curtain up on the first offering, and Dylan Emery was asking the ensemble for an opening number for a musical called The God Sister set in mafia gangland. Not surprisingly, the plot was nonsensical at times, or as Emery put it, "contextually unlikely", but on the whole the performers - including Pippa Evans, Ruth Bratt, Lucy Trodd, Sean McCann and Oliver Senton - produced one of the most entertaining half hour's radio I've heard in a long time.

This improvised show promises to leave viewers gasping like Gillian McKeith facing a bucket of maggots.

Created by veteran producer Dan Paterson, it sounds like his Whose Line Is It Anyway? for a new generation no bad thing.

Comedy talent, including Laura Solon, Justin Edwards, Marek Larwood, Pippa Evans, Humphrey Ker, David Armand and Greg Davies, will be pitting their wits in a series of games spoofing films, TV programmes and music.

Host Hugh Dennis says: "We have electronic trickery, animated chickens, songs and games including a fantastic sideways scene. It's half an hour of controlled improvised silliness and there is no scoring and no stars."
