Julian Holloway, the actor who appeared in a number of British comedy productions including a notable number of Carry On films, has died aged 80.

Holloway starred in seven movies in the film series between 1967 and 1976: Follow That Camel, Carry On Doctor, Carry On... Up The Khyber, Carry On Camping, Carry On Loving, Carry On Henry and Carry On England. He also appeared in the 1973 TV special Carry On Christmas and the 1977 compilation film, That's Carry On!.

The son of comedian and film star Stanley Holloway (Passport To Pimlico, The Lavender Hill Mob), Julian was born on 24th June 1944 and later attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He began his career in 1961, appearing in an episode of The Avengers and playing a part in the Bob Monkhouse film Dentist On The Job as 'Lab Boy'.

Holloway went on to take notable roles in TV series such as Sprout, Spanner In The Works and The Reverent Wooing Of Archibald, and played Bainbridge in the 1979 film version of Porridge. However, he is probably best known for becoming a supporting mainstay of the Carry On film series alongside the likes of Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey and Sid James.

Although primarily known as a comedy actor, outside of the genre his TV credits also include The Professionals, The New Avengers, Z-Cars and Doctor Who.

Holloway married actor Zena Walker in 1971 but they divorced shortly afterwards. Two decades later he married actor Debbie Wheeler, but this ended in divorce five years later.

He is the father of model and author Sophie Dahl, who was born after he had a brief relationship with Tessa Dahl (the daughter of Patricia Neal and Roald Dahl) in 1976.

His friend Sarah Douglas says: "I lost a dear friend yesterday and I'm so, so sad. I have known Julian Holloway since the early 70's and he has been the best of friends to me all these years. Julian was the wittiest of men and we would laugh and laugh. He was a friend through thick and thin, first in London then LA then back home again. He was also the associate producer of The Brute (1977) but I had first met him professionally in 1973 on a BBC drama called Secrets. There will be lots written about him and all his wonderful work but right now he is just a dear and sorely missed friend."
