Eddie Izzard bids to become Labour MP for Brighton
- Eddie Izzard is aiming to become Labour's candidate in Brighton for the 2024 General Election
- She says she wants to "support this brilliant city and its diverse and vibrant community"
- Izzard will have to overturn the Green Party's 19,940 majority in the constituency if she wishes to become an MP
Eddie Izzard has formally confirmed her intention to become Labour's candidate in the Brighton Pavilion constituency for the next General Election.
Long mooted by the stand-up star, she has now launched a website, eddieizzard.uk, to promote the bid.
She confirms: "I'm standing to be the next Labour MP for Brighton Pavilion, to support this brilliant city and its diverse and vibrant community. I'm just the latest in over 200 years of Izzards in East Sussex and I'm proud of my roots."
The website lists her priorities as "Education, the Climate Crisis, Housing, Healthcare, Crime and Jobs".
In 2019, Green Party leader Caroline Lucas retained the Brighton Pavilion seat, with a 19,940 majority over Labour. She is standing down at the next election, but the Green Party has selected former leader Sian Berry to take over.
Izzard, who is set to tour a 'greatest hits' stand-up show in November and December, has been looking to be involved in politics for some time. Most recently, in October she attempted to represent Labour in Sheffield Central, however lost out on that bid by 258 votes to local councillor Abtisam Mohammed.
