Eddie Izzard has formally launched a campaign to stand for parliament at the next general election.
The stand-up star has announced she will join the list of people aiming to be selected as Labour's next candidate for Sheffield Central.
The current MP, Paul Blomfield, has previously said he is standing down at the next election. No selection process has been formally started by Labour for who will succeed him, however Izzard has launched a social media campaign today stating: "Labour ideals of fairness and equality have been at the core of my life. I'm standing to be the next Labour MP for Sheffield Central to support the city that has supported me."
Izzard has been a long-term vocal supporter of Labour, having appeared in campaign videos for the political party for several decades. She studied accounting at Sheffield, and the city was also where she launched her creative career, initially as a street performer. Recently the comedian has been one of those campaigning against the closure of the city's iconic Leadmill venue.
