Matt Lucas on IMDb
- Born
- Tuesday 5th March 1974 (50 years-old)
- Nationality
- English
Lucas's comedy career began with an appearance on Vic Reeves' and Bob Mortimer's The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer, with whom he then starred in Shooting Stars. He played George Dawes, a giant baby, who would reel off a plethora of absurd gags and insults before delivering the score, while sitting at and playing a drum kit, often dressed in an adult-sized romper suit. On occasion he would play the role of George's mother, Marjorie Dawes, a character who would later appear regularly on Little Britain.
He would go on to collaborate with Reeves and Mortimer in the BBC series Randall & Hopkirk and Catterick, playing numerous roles, and he has also written for Sacha Baron Cohen.
Lucas' official double-act with David Walliams began in 1999, although they had already worked together in both Mash And Peas[/c[ and Sir Bernard's Stately Homes. In this year they co-created a comedy spoof show called Rock Profile, which took aim and famous musicians and their egos.
Lucas' biggest commercial success with Walliams came in the Noughties with Little Britain, which began life as a radio show Little Britain on BBC Radio 4 ([y]2000-2002[/y]), before moving to BBC Three as ]Little Britain] from 2003-2004, and finally to BBC One (2005-2007). Lucas became a household name with its switch to TV, playing characters such as homophobic homosexual Daffyd Thomas, teenage chav Vicky Pollard, and slimming helper Marjorie Dawes. The programme's title stems from the term Little England(er), a reference to narrow-mindedness, ignorance, and insularity - traits that characterise several of the characters in the show. Little Britain is fondly remembered to this day as immortalising certain types of British individual in the public consciousness.
In 2007 he released a new, charity version of The Proclaimers' I'm Gonna Be with Peter Kay, and latterly he has played Nardole in Doctor Who, Tweedledee and Tweedledum in Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland, and also lent his voice to the CGI film Gnomeo And Juliet.
After Little Britain Lucas took on a range of roles outside comedy, and made a cameo appearance in Edgar Wright's 2004 film Shaun Of The Dead. In 2008 he teamed up once more with Walliams to make Little Britain USA, a spin-off-continuation of Little Britain now set in the US, and in 2010 they released Come Fly With Me, a mockumentary comedy series set in an airport and filmed in a fly-on-the-wall style, spoofing British TV documentaries such as Airport and Airline.
In February 2010, Lucas began hosting his own radio show, And The Winner Is, in which he presented several fictional awards based on guest nominations, and in 2012 this was transformed into a BBC One panel show called The Matt Lucas Awards.
Known for his warmth and charm, Lucas is a regular on British panel shows and comedy series.
