Jumping the shark: The Mighty Boosh

Somewhere between the second and third series, the Boosh started to believe its own hype. Live shows became gigs, Fielding and Barratt living out their own rock'n'roll fantasies. The third series was - Crack Fox aside - dry, uninspired, overly slick, self-referential and smug.

First in a new series of Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith's merrily macabre anthology, although the recent Christmas special counts as one of this run's six, so it's really episode two. It's a chamber piece about four businessmen - including Philip Glenister and Jason Watkins, AKA That Bloke Who Pops Up In Everything - bickering over who gets to pay the bill in a restaurant. Tensions rise, secrets bubble to the surface and it all goes rather badly. A tight, gloriously stressful half-hour.

Armstrong and Bain's police dramedy packed swipes at PR, bureaucracy and obsession with social media into its sprawling, Danny Boyle-directed pilot. Reviews flitted between a muddled if ambitious curio and a bracing, blackly comedic tour de force, but the truth lies somewhere in between. A cop Thick Of It laced with Black Mirror nihilism, catch the inaugural episode on 4oD ahead of the full series due later this year.

Following the wardrobe-centric murderings of the opening episode, this second tale features creators Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith as hapless burglars attempting to liberate a painting from a couple's home. An almost wordless half-hour of physical comedy, it plays out like a French farce, its comedic strokes far broader than last week. If you find two men silently mime-arguing about how long it takes to have a poo funny, you're on sturdy ground here.
