Video: Lenny Henry returns to stand-up

The energetic comic, Lenny Henry tells BBC Breakfast about returning to the stage in his life story "Cradle to Rave", mixing humour with his life-long love of music.

Lenny's tour begins in January and he'll also host the new BBC magic show "The Magicians" later in the New Year.

The stand-up show has reached its sixth series and kicks off with some trusty names. Mock the Week regular Sean Lock is the host and dishes out gags about the perils of people wanting to try on your glasses and - that old topic that just about anyone can relate to - having children. He introduces Liverpudlian John Bishop, whose own comedy series was shown on BBC One in the summer. Over the following five episodes we can expect to see Dara O Briain, Lenny Henry, Jon Richardson and Shappi Khorsandi among those taking the stage.

The man who once joked that he would have to assassinate Lenny Henry to have any chance of having his own show manages to do so without resorting to wetwork. Although - has anyone seen Len on the telly recently? Hmmm... I always try and appraise sketch shows without resorting to the cliché of "hit and miss", and always fail. Maybe that's because it's so, so true...

Scott Matthewman, The Stage, 29th October 2010

If you thought Paul Whitehouse and Harry Enfield stopped being funny around 1997 - well, you're basically right, especially having watched Whitehouse's cringeworthy Aviva adverts. Seeing this series advertise guest appearances from such cutting-edge comic luminaries as Lenny Henry doesn't fill one with confidence either. But give this sketch show series a chance - the veteran pair do manage to recall former glories from time to time, especially with Gabbatore, the corrupt Italian politician with an eye for the ladies (remind you of anyone?), and a Dragons' Den spoof that is woundingly accurate.
